Shadab Khan shines again as Pakistan clinch low-scoring thriller

Shadab Khan shines again as Pakistan clinch low-scoring thriller

For a second time in as many games, West Indies were undone by the guile and deception of the 18-year-old leg spinner Shadab Khan. Marlon Samuels, the two-time World T20-winning batsman even attempted some intimidation tactics on the youngster during a quickfire innings of 44. But Shadab showed he had the spunk and the stomach to get involved in a staredown and matched that with returns of 4 for 14 in Pakistan's tense three-run win at the Queen's Park Oval in Trinidad in a game of confrontations and collisions.
The visitors successfully defended a measly 132 to extend their recent dominance over West Indies. Sarfraz Ahmed's unbeaten run as captain of the T20 side also stretched to six games in the process.
Despite Samuels's early aggression in the small chase and the Shadab heroics that followed, the contest simmered along wonderfully to move towards a photo finish. Fourteen runs were required off the final Hasan Ali over, which was quickly slashed down to six from four with two nonchalant swings of the blade from Sunil Narine.
The 22-year-old Hasan then turned to bowling off-cutters as Narine played and missed two deliveries either side of a wide. The fifth ball resulted in Narine's run-out, leaving even the well-set Jason Holder (26* off 17) needing a six to win or a four to tie the contest. He could only dig out a full-length delivery down the ground for a single, sparking jubilant celebrations in the Pakistan camp.
Like with their fielding performance, West Indies' chase swung between the sublime and the ludicrous. Evin Lewis was run out in bizarre fashion early on despite technically going past the popping crease at the non-strikers end. His feet were off the ground and his bat had slipped off his hand during an attempt to avoid a collision with a fielder backing up for the overthrow. The dressing room wasn't pleased but those were the rules.
Another collision not too long after, involving Ahmed Shehzad and Chadwick Walton, turned a little more serious, requiring the summoning of the paramedics and an ambulance.
Shehzad, who'd charged in from backward point to field a delivery, found himself in the path of an onrushing Walton and took a kneww to the back of his neck. After initial treatment, the Pakistan opener was fitted with a neck brace and stretchered off in an ambulance. The worries however were allayed a few overs later when Shehzad took the field once more.
But by then, Samuels had set himself up to power West Indies' chase almost single-handedly. In a bid to unsettle the spinners on a conducive surface, the senior batsman launched a serious counter-attack. A 19-run over of Imad Wasim took the hosts to 60 for 1 after eight overs.
Shadab then sprung into action of his own. A googly cleaned up Walton. In his next over, the leggie spun one past Kieron Pollard and had him stumped before cleaning up a befuddled Rovmann Powell for a first-ball duck. Hasan Ali took Lendl Simmons out LBW with an inswinger. Samuels attempted to play off Shadab's final over but another googly found his outside edge on its way to the keeper, handing West Indies their biggest blow. From 60 for 1, they fell to 81 for 6.
Even with the required rate creeping up past the eight-run mark, the hosts trusted their boundary-hitting abilities to bail them out in the small chase. It nearly did as captain Carlos Brathwaite and Holder stitched a vital 33-run stand before a 148kmph Wahab Riaz full delivery breached Brathwaite's attempts to mow the ball to cow corner. The equation reduced from 30 off three to 19 off two before Wahab gave Ali a healthy cushion of 14 to defend in the final over.
Perhaps, Wahab's most telling strikes in the game came in the earlier innings when he combined with Shadab to put on a 36-run stand for the ninth wicket that gave Pakistan four more runs than the average T20I score at the venue. Wahab muscled two sixes and a four in his 10-ball 24 that tilted the momentum in the visitors' favour right at the very end despite an admirable bowling effort from West Indies, who opted to field.
Only Babar Azam (27 off 28) and Shoaib Malik (28 off 20) showed any control on the wicket as Pakistan struggled to force the pace on the wicket. Samuel Badree struck in the first over to remove Kamran Akmal (0) and then returned to remove debutant Fakhar Zaman in his frugal returns of 2 for 14. Narine bowled his mixed bags to claim 3 for 22 and captain Brathwaite also added three wickets ( 3 for 37). His figures, however, bore the brunt of several fiedling lapses, all of which cost the hosts dear at the end.
Brief scores: Pakistan 132 in 20 overs (Shoaib Malik 28, Babar Azam 27; Sunil Narine 3-22) beat West Indies 129/8 in 20 overs (Marlon Samuels 44, Jason Holder 26*; Shadab Khan 4-14) by three runs.

KL Rahul set to miss IPL 2017 due to shoulder surgery: Reports

KL Rahul set to miss IPL 2017 due to shoulder surgery: Reports
Rahul is reportedly flying to England for a surgery on his troubled left shoulder. © BCCI
Already sweating over the fitness of their skipper Virat Kohli, Royal Challengers Bangalore have been dealt with another major blow ahead of the 10th edition of the Indian Premier League with the prospect of their in-form wicketkeeper-batsman KL Rahul skipping the upcoming season due to injury.
Rahul, who carried a shoulder injury throughout the recently-concluded four-match Test series against Australia, is likely to travel to England next week for a surgery that could effectively rule him out of the entire IPL 2017. Despite the injury, the 24-year-old batsman was India's second highest run-getter in the Test series with 393 runs, behind Cheteshwar Pujara, who had 405.
While there is no clarity on how long Rahul would take for full recovery, the Karnataka player and the national side would be hoping he is back in the thick of things by the time the team reunites ahead of the 2017 Champions Trophy in England in June. The limited-overs competition will be followed by a full tour of Sri Lanka in July-August.

Mohammad Irfan suspended by PCB for one year

Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Irfan has been handed out a one-year suspension and a fine of PKR 1 million by the Pakistan Cricket Board for his connection in the PSL corruption case.
Irfan has been suspended after he violated PCB's anti- corruption code by not reporting to the PCB Vigilance and Security Department about the two approaches that were made to him to involve in corruption.
He pleaded guilty to the charges by submitting a written statement on Monday (March 27) and then had two meetings with the board. The tall pacer also requested for forgiveness, while strongly denying any direct involvement in any fixing activity.
"I was approached twice and it was my mistake that I did not report it to PCB's anti-corruption unit," Irfan said. "I admit my mistake for not reporting it to the ACU but I didn't get involved in any corrupt activity and gave a shut-up call to those who approached me.
"I ask the whole nation to forgive me if anyone is hurt by this mistake of mine. I hope you will forgive me."
Irfan was originally questioned along with Shahzaib Hasan and Zulfiqar Babar in the opening week of the PSL and subsequently allowed to play in the league. He was later placed under provisional suspension on March 14 for breaching PCB's Code Article 2.4.4 which relates to "Failing to disclose to the PCB Vigilance and Security Department (without unnecessary delay) full details of any approaches or invitations received by the Participant to engage in Corrupt Conduct under this Anti-Corruption Code."
PSL 2017 plunged into a corruption mess after it was revealed that two Islamabad United players, Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif, were involved in acts that violated PCB's anti-corruption code. Both Sharjeel and Latif admitted to a breach of discipline, but vehemently denied spot-fixing charges.
While Sharjeel and Latif were placed under immediate suspension, two other players, Irfan and Shahzaib, who were also linked to the mess, were allowed to continue playing in the league. The four Islamabad United players were accused of allegedly meeting the bookie soon after the season's opening game between Islamabad United and Peshawar Zalmi ended in Dubai, on February 9.
The 34-year-old Irfan, whose central contract also stands suspended, has a window of little relief and can get his suspension reduced to six months if
  • There is no further/additional breach of the PCB Code by Irfan within one (01) year of the commencement of the period of Ineligibility; and no previous breach of the Code by Irfan comes to light. If any such breach(es) take place the PCB shall reserve the right to initiate separate and independent proceedings against Irfan under the Code.
  • He will provide Substantial Assistance (as described under the Code) to the PCB Vigilance and Security; and
  • He will, over the next six months, participate under the auspices of PCB in programs of Anti- Corruption education, which may include amongst other things, delivering lectures on Anti-Corruption at such places and to such audiences as the PCB Vigilance and Security Department deems fit and appearing in any Anti-Corruption videos.

Emergence of pacers, lower order contributions India's biggest takeaways

Emergence of pacers, lower order contributions India's biggest takeaways
India have now won seven series on the trot and are on top of the Test rankings. © AFP
Two years ago, India were reeling at seventh spot in the ICC Rankings. They hadn't played a Test at home for more than a year, and had just lost a series in Australia. They had just seen their captain step down and faced uncertainty. Virat Kohli was to take over, and there were questions marks over his temperament.
Two years hence, India sit pretty at the top of the ladder and have opened up a good lead. Kohli brought in a brand of cricket to the team that's aggressive, ruthless and in your face. India ended their season with a series win over Australia to cap off one of their best phases in Test cricket. They have now won seven series on the trot, and currently hold the trophy over every other Test nation.
It's an achievement few would have thought possible. But given India's marathon home season, there was always a chance. In the just concluded season, India beat West Indies 2-0, blanked New Zealand 3-0, thumped England 4-0, saw off Bangladesh 1-0 and overcame Australia 2-1. A season of 17 Tests ended with 12 wins, four draws and 1 defeat. It saw them climb to top spot early, then lose it to Pakistan before wrenching it back and making it their own.
Anil Kumble had taken over just ahead of the season, and with his experience and purpose, he has forged together a group full of match-winners. The biggest positive for India will be that their core group has become big, and each one has the potential to change games and series. If before the start of the season, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, R Ashwin and R Jadeja were the pillars, the likes of Wriddhiman Saha, Cheteshwar Pujara, Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Shami have become important cogs in the machine, too.
But now, firmly perched atop the rankings, India will have to show that they are indeed the number 1 side in the world by beating their opponents away from home. India are slated to tour Sri Lanka this year, while South Africa, England and Australia should follow soon after. If Kohli's side are able to prove away from home, they will go down as one of the great sides of the modern era.
"We are very happy with No. 1 ranking in the world, but our main challenge begins now. If we can conquer the overseas season, that's when you will see a broader smile on my face when I sit down for the press conference. To understand where we are placed and the kind of cricket we have played, and where we stand as individuals at the end of season, it makes me very happy as a captain," Kohli said after their series win over Australia.
The emergence of the pacers will be one of India's biggest takeaways - especially during this home stretch. Umesh has transformed into one of India's key bowlers, wreaking havoc with the new ball and old, to always keep India in the game. In the past twelve months, Umesh has really stepped up his game, taking 35 wickets in 14 Tests. More than the numbers, it is the impact that he has had on the game that would be most pleasing to see for India.
Shami has already proved that he is India's most skilful pacer, and should he manage to remain fit, India will have a potent pace attack for the long run. Ishant Sharma and Bhuvneshwar Kumar are good back up players to have too.
The coming of age of India's allrounders and the batting contributions of the lower order will give India hope when they travel away. Saha has been a revelation this season, scoring three hundreds and averaging 46. Ashwin and Jadeja too have scored plenty of important runs, and will give India the confidence that they can do well overseas.
Kohli and Pujara have become the linchpins of the batting line-up, but KL Rahul and Murali Vijay have become key members, too. India's only concern will be their number six and whether they should go in with six batters. Karun Nair has hit a triple hundred, but has done little else. Rohit Sharma missed most of the season through injury, while Shreyas Iyer has only been part of the Test squad once and didn't play. India will hope to find themselves a reliable number six as soon as possible.
"I can sit down and be proud of what the guys have been able to achieve since then and different aspects have come up - lower-order contributions, spinners have been outstanding throughout, fast bowlers have been brilliant, the batsmen have stepped up on many occasions. Different people. Not just one or two guys, but everyone has contributed throughout the season. If you don't have a team performance, you can't be the No. 1 team in the world. As simple as that.
"If you want to win more Test games, you have to have complete team performances. It's the main reason why we are sitting here as the No. 1 team in the world and we have quite a fair distance above the other teams. That makes me very proud as a captain and all the guys in the change room are very happy with what they have been able to achieve and ending the season on a high," Kohli said, while summing up the season.
It has been a season to remember for India, not only because of the results, but also thanks to the kind of quality cricket they put on display. There's a tougher phase ahead for Virat Kohli and Anil Kumble, and what they do will become this team's defining moment.

Obstructions abound in getting Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal to Chelsea

Obstructions abound in getting Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal to Chelsea
With contract extensions to be negotiated and exit strategies put in place, the transfer rumour mill is once again whirring into action. First, there were reports of Real Madrid considering moves for Chelsea's Thibaut Courtois and Eden Hazard. Now the latest high-profile mutterings concern a possible pursuit of Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez by Chelsea manager Antonio Conte.
As always, the level of truth behind the story is hard to discern, though it is not difficult to see why the Chelsea manager would want to bring him to Stamford Bridge. The Chilean has all the attributes that Conte likes in a player. His work rate is exemplary, coupling his desire to chase lost causes with being sufficiently gifted to turn them into goal-scoring opportunities. His sheer ability is abundant with perhaps only Hazard possessing greater natural talent among all his peers in English football. Capable of both creating chances from nothing or scoring from out of nowhere, Sanchez can be utterly devastating on his day. But it is his winning mentality, something that sets him apart from the majority of his Arsenal teammates, which will be most attractive to Conte.
The Italian doesn't do draws, or at least they are never the objective of his team, with Chelsea having drawn just three of their 28 league games. Even when playing away against testing opposition such as Liverpool, Burnley and Stoke City, Conte has never shied away from making positive substitutions and formation shifts to make a bid for victory despite risking defeat. A point is rarely satisfactory.
Conte, therefore, will surely have noted Sanchez's reaction to Arsenal equalising late on at Bournemouth in January, having been 3-0 down with 20 minutes to play. While goalscorer Olivier Giroud cavorted in front of the Arsenal fans with many of his teammates, it was only Sanchez who was aware that a point was inadequate considering their ambitions for the season. Eschewing the celebrations, he instead urged his team back to their own half so that they could strive for a winner, a possibility that had escaped his colleagues.
EPA/WILL OLIVER
That brief incident perfectly encapsulated why he now appears to see his future away from Arsenal and exactly why any Premier League manager would love to have him in his team. A game-changer, a tireless runner, a born winner and able to play anywhere across the front of Chelsea's favoured 3-4-3 formation, he certainly fits the description of a Conte player.
Whether the transfer will actually occur is another matter entirely. There has never been any love lost between Chelsea and Arsenal with Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger's naked enmity over the past decade or so deepening the battle lines between the clubs. Two institutions with diametrically opposed philosophies and starkly different recent histories, the chance of Arsenal willingly selling their best player to one of their very biggest rivals is nearly non-existent.
But that doesn't mean it won't happen. If Sanchez were to dig his heels in and demand a move across London, and Chelsea were to submit a suitably ludicrous offer, one over and above those of his other suitors, then pure pragmatism would see the deal concluded. There is history in this regard, remember. Ashley Cole's transfer from Arsenal to Chelsea in 2006 was one of the most acrimonious in living memory, at least in England, and came about due to the player himself being so determined to push the transfer through that it became virtually inevitable.
In the intervening years, no other player has moved directly from Arsenal to Chelsea, though some have gone the other way. William Gallas was included as a makeweight in the Cole transfer, having himself agitated for a move, while Arsenal bought Lassana Diarra from Chelsea in 2007 and, rather curiously, loaned Yossi Benayoun from them in 2011. Petr Cech also made a notable £10 million switch in 2015.
Given that backdrop, the materialisation of a Sanchez to Chelsea transfer would be seismic not least in the expected reaction from the Arsenal faithful who have latterly become more vocal in their discontent. Such a move would not only see a major rival hugely strengthened but would present yet another opportunity for Chelsea fans to rub Arsenal supporters' noses in it.
Who would make way for Sanchez at Chelsea is another point to consider, though not for too long. Ideally, he could play in a nominal wide position in a front three with Hazard and Diego Costa even if that would be highly unfortunate for the reborn Pedro Rodriguez. Equally, if Hazard were to move to the Santiago Bernabeu or Costa were to depart then Sanchez could ably fill either of their roles. With a broader, improved squad required for next season's assault on the Champions League, retaining all their current assets while signing the Chilean would clearly be the best result for Conte.
From a playing perspective, the case for Chelsea signing Sanchez is absolutely clear. The path that might take the player from Arsenal all the way to holding up a royal blue shirt with his name on the back, however, is riddled with obstacles.

Rafael Nadal too good in 'fearful forehand' battle vs. Jack Sock

Rafael Nadal too good in 'fearful forehand' battle vs. Jack Sock
Two years ago, Hawkeye technology determined that, on average, Rafael Nadal's forehand produced 3,391 revolutions per minute. Jack Sock, with his extreme western grip, was second at 3,351. The two also had the fastest average forehand speed, 77 miles per hour, and are generally considered to have the fastest racket-head speed when swinging at the ball.
When the numbers crunchers at this year's Australian Open rolled out the average numbers for 2012-16, Sock had opened up the gap, posting an 86.33-mph forehand. Rafa was well back at 79.32. At the Miami Open, Sock had a more modest lead, 3,281-3,245 and 80 mph to 77.
But that edge did little to help Sock on Wednesday night in Miami as the world's two most fearful forehands met in the quarterfinals of the Miami Open.
The No. 5-seeded Nadal artfully eliminated Sock 6-2, 6-3 and will next play Fabio Fognini in Friday's semifinals.
On this occasion, it was Rafa who exhibited a greater control over his forehand and his nerves -- and a vastly better backhand.
Relentlessly attacking Sock's weaker wing -- a game plan that has worked historically against a guy named Roger Federer -- Nadal has now won all three of his matches against Sock. Tactically, he sent more serves toward Sock's forehand, which had to surprise him. Nadal's defense throughout the 83-minute match was vintage.
"Yes," Nadal said in his on-court interview. "That's something, playing against top players, that makes the difference. I was able to win the important points."
This is Nadal's seventh semifinal run in 13 attempts -- the most times he has ever played a tournament without managing to win it at least once. Rafa, who turns 31 during the upcoming French Open, fell to the resurgent Federer in the fourth round at Indian Wells, while Sock was his victim in the semifinals -- his first career ATP Masters 1000 appearance in the final four.
Rafa could meet Federer in a potentially delicious final -- an encounter that would be their third meeting of the young year.
There's still a lot to like about Sock, who is off to the best start of his career. He entered Miami with a career-best No. 17 ranking and will rise to at least No. 15 when the new rankings come out Monday. The only younger players ranked ahead of Sock are 21-year-old Nick Kyrgios and 23-year-old Lucas Pouille.
Sock and Nadal, each with 18 match wins, lead the rest of the ATP World Tour field. Sock came in as the No. 7 player in the year-end Race to London standings. He's now 18-4 and, despite the loss to Rafa, has beaten four of the past six top-10 players he has played.
This was Sock's fourth straight quarterfinal appearance in an ATP Masters 1000 tournament going back to Shanghai and Paris last season -- the first American to do so since Andre Agassi in 1999. He's also playing in Thursday's the doubles semifinals with Nicholas Monroe.
Essentially, Sock will do anything not to hit a backhand, a stroke he has nonetheless worked hard to improve, especially crosscourt. The speed and spin on his forehand take time away from opponents, but it also requires more time to execute. This is one reason Sock -- and Rafa, too -- is so comfortable on clay.
Even when he lost the No. 1-ranking for American men to John Isner in the final regular-season tournament of 2016, it seemed obvious Sock was destined to become the United States' next top-10 player.
It has been six years since it happened last. Mardy Fish was No. 8 in 2011.
Andy Roddick finished among the top 10 for nine consecutive years (2002-10). He was joined in that time by Andre Agassi (four times), James Blake (twice) and Fish (once).
Entering the season, Sock found himself bunched in a group with fellow Americans Isner, Steve Johnson and Sam Querrey. Now Sock, a few years ahead of a talented pack of 19- and 20-year-olds, has separated himself.
But while that's a worthy accomplishment, it's not going to get him past the likes of Rafael Nadal -- not yet anyway.

Jadeja equals Kohli, Vijay and Rahul

Jadeja equals Kohli, Vijay and Rahul
6 Number of 50-plus scores for Ravindra Jadeja this season, same as by Virat Kohli, M Vijay and KL Rahul. Only Cheteshwar Pujara (12) has made more such scores in the season. Jadeja is also the second-highest wicket-taker in the season.

3 Players to score 500-plus runs and take 50-plus wickets in a season - Kapil Dev in 1979-80, Mitchell Johnson in 2008-09 and Jadeja in this 2016-17 season. Jadeja has made 556 runs and picked up 71 wickets in 13 matches, both being higher than those of Kapil and Johnson's numbers. Jadeja averages 42.76 with bat and 22.83 with ball.
64 Wickets for Nathan Lyon against India - the second-most by a spinner. He edged past Lance Gibbs (63) and Derek Underwood (62). Only Muttiah Muralitharan (105) has more than Lyon against India. Lyon's strike rate of 56.7 is better than Muralitharan's 66.8.
5 Five-wicket hauls for Lyon against India, in 14 Tests. Against all other teams he has registered only four such hauls in 53 Tests.
